Spiced red cabbage (Rode kool)

 Traditional recipe from The Netherlands

  • 1 small red cabbage
  • 1/4 cup of butter or margarine
  • 3 cloves
  • 2 apples
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • vinegar
  • salt




Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and cut it in half. Remove the core.

Wash and shred the cabbage very thinly.

In a sauce pan, add a little butter or margarine and 1 cup of water. Add the red cabbage, the cloves, the apples (peeled, cored and sliced) and let it simmer with the lid on for 45 minutes.

Then add the rest of the butter or margarine, the sugar, vinegar and simmer for another 5 minutes.
